As we all know, there are tons of movies that are adapted from books, inspired by books, or made about books. A vast majority of the time, the movie is enjoyable in its own right, but not as good as the book. This is mostly because the movie doesn't even come close to touching on all of the characters and storylines in the book. It would simply be too long.
However, every once in a while there is a movie adaptation that, dare I say it, is better than the book. Sometimes the movie is MUCH better.
The book is just weird. Vianne is a witch who knowingly helps Armand commit suicide by feeding her lots of rich foods. Roux ends up with Josephine. Nope.
This one is easy. The movie (and its soundtrack, thanks to John Williams) is gorgeous.

In this case, the movie takes all of the awesome parts of the book and makes them into the movie everyone loves. The parts left out are a snooze. I was really surprised when I read the book.
Stardust

Yvaine is much easier to connect with in the movie. Plus, Robert De Niro's flamboyant sky pirate makes it that much funnier.

I agree on Princess Bride and HUGELY disagree on Stardust!!
ReplyDeleteHa! I enjoyed the book, but I saw the movie several years before reading the book so I think that colors my reaction to the book.
DeleteThis is a super helpful list! I just realized I've seen most of these movies but read *none* of the books. I've wanted to read Chocolat for a long time, but now I think I might not.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad it was helpful. The book is a totally different animal.
DeleteThe Princess Bride--absolutely! And I have to add...I love Jurassic Park :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't read it, but I'll take your word for it! The movie is great.
